And away we go...

I guess you loved the idea of me, a dusty photo to reminisce about one cold winter day, breathing in the haze of the newly kindled fires of the future. I guess I was a pin up of luminescent whims, a field of flowers whose beauty carries far and wide without words - for words taint that which is desirable, and send solitude over the horizon.
The flowers wilt, the sky blackens, the rain falls.
Colour is washed away, and with it, the beauty you left behind.

EMA

  • Oct. 27th, 2008 at 11:03 PM

Firstly, this post is based upon personal experience and observations. I will not claim my post can be generalised to the whole population, however, I have an opinion on this matter and I do wish to contribute.

I am 17 years old, in my second year of 6th form. I do 4 A2 subjects, last year I did 5 AS subjects. I know there are certain people who discredit the opinions of students who study "Mickey Mouse" subjects, and just to gain their "respect" my subjects are as follows: Chemistry, Maths, Biology & Psychology. You know, "the hard" ones.
I live alone, in a flat supported by (Heaven forbid!) housing benefit. This is the consequence of escaping abuse, which was a dangerous situation for myself to be in. I am at 6th form in order to gain the qualifications to study Medicine, and I find that EMA is of a great help.

Now, when I started 6th form, I lived with my parents, and my dad's income was over 40k a year. Now many would assume that I would be extremely well off due to this, however, I have three younger sisters, so the money is spread a lot thinner. Also, my father is an alcoholic and smoker, and a lot of his wage is taken up substantiating those needs. Then take into account mortgage, bills and other costs for living and there is very little left. I started working as early as I could - I have been paying for my own lunches since I was thirteen using the £13 a week wage from my paper round. At 16, I got a job in a hotel, and graduated to paying for my bus fare also (!!) So I guess that was life on the "unfair" side of EMA.
It was indeed frustrating watching my friends gain "free money" every week which they would proceed to spend on clothing, social activities and just general fluff. I was somewhat bitter towards them and was guilty of complaining very viciously at every opportunity.

In that aspect, EMA is most certainly flawed. The graduated income spectrum which the eligibility system uses is definitely flawed as it does not take into account mortgage costs, the amount of children the parents have, travel distance* (some people are eligible for free travel, others are not) and many other factors. It is the sheer multitude of factors and the unique nature of every student's living situation that make EMA impossible to be truly "fair".
But I'm sure you all know that!

Now, I live independently. At the age of 17, I study a scheduled 20 hours a week, more if you count self study and I work 7-15 hours a week in a hotel. So time is tight. I get £48 a week Income Support (at which point you are not permitted to label me a leech, as without it, I would not have the luxury of having... oh wait... Food.)
Sorted? Think again. Unlike most people, not only am I worrying about lunch and bus fare, oh no, I also have electricity, water and gas bills, grocery costs, phone and internet bills, clothing... And the only person that pays all that is myself. It's great understanding the true meaning of "credit crunch" at such a young age!
I'm pretty sure that the people that complain about not getting EMA have not seen that side of living, and most won't until they hit the age of 18 and they leave full time education or go to university. Again, we have some exceptions and they should understand better than most the necessity of EMA.

So, through my own experiences, I can only conclude that EMA is unfairly allocated, it is extremely necessary for some, not so much  for others, and that most people that don't get it are ferociously ignorant and uninformed in their bitterly fuelled arguments.

The appeal of the Irish accent is a mysterious thing indeed. It is so mysterious, in fact, that even mere possession of this treasured entity can turn an otherwise average being into a complete and utter sex god.
And suits, as well. A guy can look perfectly average until, lo and behold, he finds himself dressed in material that for some absurd reason just oozes sex appeal.
And nobody knows why.

And another thing. Why can cats jump so high? It scares me the way they can scale a kitchen with ease. If I tried to do that I'd end up with two broken legs and a fractured eyeball.

This world just leaves too many questions unanswered.

What is with the story arcs at the moment? I'm going mad trying to comprehend them all.
So Peter's gone all evil and then suddenly he's powerless and now what?
And killing Adam - that achieved WHAT exactly, apart from a massive fail.
Ughhhh. Stop killing the character's selling points. And the characters. :|
